About us

The EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE is a film music concert and production company. Since its foundation in 2000, under the artistic direction of Frank Strobel and mananging director Beate Warkentien, EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE has been consistently researching original music, new scorings and restored film prints. It aims to establish the film and music genre as an independent art form in live concerts, making it accessible to large audiences.

The result of this work is the FILMPHILHARMONIC EDITION, a catalogue including over 100 film concerts and film music concerts. Our collection of material data relating to silent film projects and film music works is unique. Besides Matrix and Metropolis the EDITION includes Chaplin Classics (Gold Rush, Modern Times, City Lights, The Circus), German Classics (Nosferatu, Die Nibelungen, Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed), and Russian Classics (Battleship Potemkin, New Babylon, The Last Days of St. Petersburg). Also, the EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE team develops its own concepts for film music concerts as well as working on commission.

As a production company for film music the EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE not only procures excellent orchestras but also provides onsite organisation and support of the production, procurement of conductors, preperation of sheet music, recording technology, and sound engineers.

Unique in this form in Europe, the EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE has set up an orchestra association that is dedicated to the film and music genre. At present, its members consist of Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, Hamburger Symphoniker, Münchner Symphoniker, Staatskapelle Weimar, WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln, Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock, and Ensemble Kontraste.
